Kristie Batten: West Wits ramping up at high-grade Qala Shallows gold operations

West Wits has poured first gold at Qala Shallows — South Africa's first new underground mine in 15 years — and is now ramping up production. MD Rudi Deysel highlighted strong project economics (81% IRR, US$2.7bn revenue potential at US$2,850/oz gold) and an AISC below US$1,300/oz, fully funded via a $97m Absa/Nedbank package.

To end of June, output was 227oz with $32m cash on hand and 544m of underground development complete; steady-state production of 70,000ozpa is targeted by early 2029. Beyond Qala Shallows, last month's Project 200 scoping study pointed to a possible 200,000ozpa, 35-year operation, and the company will also explore Bird Reef Central for uranium.
